Set your dance compass

Setting intentions for social dancing

The social dance floor is a vibrant space filled with energy, music, and connection. But it can also be a bit overwhelming, especially if you're trying to manage your energy and make the most of the experience. Setting intentions before you step onto the dance floor can help you navigate the social with presence and purpose.

Here are a few ways to set your energy compass for your next social dance:

Cultivate your mindset. It’s up to you which one! You can aim for a positive mindset, an open mindset, a willingness to connect with others or to keep your energy with yourself. Keep a positive attitude at all times, but ask yourself the question before entering the dance floor: what is my intention for today?

Your energy influences your dance experience and sets the tone for your interactions.

When on your way to a social, take a moment to tune in with yourself. Check a few things:

  • How do I feel in this moment? - checking in with your current state

  • How do I want to feel today in my dance? - connecting with your preferred state

  • Is there something that am longing for today, that I could ask from my dance partner - identifying your needs and wants that are ok to bring on board on the dance floor (such as fun, connection, laughter, presence, practice, learning, consensual contact)

  • Is there something that am longing for today, that I should not be asking from my dance partner - honestly identifying your needs and want that are not to be sought after on the dance floor and should be left at home (such as non-consensual intimacy, non-consensual physical touch)

Prioritize your well-being at all times. Social dancing can be physically and mentally demanding. Pace yourself, take breaks when needed, and stay hydrated. Listen to your body and honor its signals.

Identify your boundaries and set them. It’s totally fine to say “no” to dances if you need a rest or feel uncomfortable. Your comfort and safety are paramount.

By setting clear intentions for your energy and identifying your wishes for the day, you can create a more fulfilling and enjoyable social dance experience. You'll not only dance with more presence and awareness but there’s also the possibility to connect with others on a deeper level. Or not, if that’s simply not what you want. It’s up to you!
