Maximise your dance class

Setting intentions for learning

Stepping into a dance class and course is like embarking on a mini-adventure. It's a chance to explore new movements, challenge your body and mind, and connect with the music. But with so much to absorb, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Setting clear intentions before class can help you focus your energy and make the most of your learning experience.

Here are a few ways to set your learning compass before your next dance class!

Check in with your body. How does it feel today? Is there any part of your body that requires a bit of extra attention today? Do not ever let anyone force you into a movement, not even the teachers.

Understand that the warming-up is not the time to look pretty, it’s the time for your body to ease into the rest of the class. Use it to tune in with your body and identify today’s boundaries.

Embrace the beginner’s mindset. Even if you've been dancing for a while, approaching each class with a beginner's mind allows you to absorb new information and refine your technique.

Be present and engaged. Minimise distractions and give your full attention to the instructor and the material. Active listening and participation are key to effective learning.

Feel free to ask any question you want. Don't hesitate to ask questions if something is unclear. Your instructor is there to guide you.

Practice self-compassion. Learning takes time and patience. Don't get discouraged by mistakes. See them as opportunities for growth.

Celebrate your progress. Acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small. Every step forward is a victory.

By setting clear intentions for learning, you can transform your dance class from a passive experience into an active and engaging journey of self-discovery and skill development. Use the time in between classes to practice the skills that you’ve just learned!
